What lies Beyond the familiar?

Recently, life made me stop.  I had shingles, and my body made the decision for me. I couldn't simply push through, catch up, or carry on as normal. I had to rest.

I'm still recovering, and one of the things I've found myself doing is something I don't always find easy:

giving myself permission to stop.

I've always been someone who can find herself in a comfortable hole. A duvet day can be wonderful; for me, sometimes that duvet day can stretch into weeks. And the longer I stay there, the harder it becomes to climb back out.

Which got me thinking about The Sanctuary & Beyond.

The Sanctuary

A sanctuary isn't necessarily a place.

It can be a feeling — that moment when everything quietens and you can breathe.

It might be a favourite chair, a cup of tea, a scent, a piece of jewellery, a bath, a book, or something you've made for yourself.

Perhaps that's what I want the things I create to become: little anchors to those moments.

A bottle of essential oil that you reach for when you need to pause.

A piece of jewellery that makes you feel good every time you put it on.

Something beautiful, comforting or nourishing that becomes part of your own ritual.

Not simply something to buy, but something that helps create your Sanctuary — wherever you happen to be.

Because sometimes, where you are is exactly where you need to be.

But not forever.

The familiar can become comfortable. Too comfortable.  There is nothing wrong with being comfortable. We need to appreciate it while we can.

Wrapped in a duvet, surrounded by the things we know, we feel safe. Sometimes we desperately need that.  But stay there too long and something changes.  Comfort can become inertia. Rest can become stagnation. And the longer we remain there, the harder it can become to pull ourselves out.

That's why Beyond matters.

It isn't about constantly striving for something bigger or better. It's simply about remembering to look up.  Sometimes, asking ourselves a few simple questions can be enough to start moving again:

What's next?     What could I learn?     What could I change?     What might I discover?

Sometimes we just need something to be excited about again.

Looking Beyond doesn't mean abandoning the Now.

Appreciate the Now. Be present in it. Rest when you need to.

But don't dwell there so long that the familiar becomes a place you can no longer leave.  I think that's the balance I'm still learning:

The Sanctuary can be found in small, grounding rituals: a warm mug of your favourite drink, a familiar scent, a favourite book, a bath, or a piece of jewellery against your skin.

These simple details bring you back to yourself. They remind you that the Now can be enough — not an escape from life, but a way of feeling held within it.

Perhaps that's what a bottle of essential oil, a calming blend, or a piece of jewellery can offer: a small, tangible reminder to pause, breathe, and be present.

Sometimes, being fully present in the Now is the first step towards discovering what lies Beyond it.
